Activities to enjoy at home during the summer holidays
- Go on a nature treasure hunt
Head into the garden, or local park if you want to venture out, with a checklist of things to find. Look for colourful flowers, unusual leaves, feathers, insects, smooth stones, or animal footprints. It’s a fantastic way to get children exploring and appreciating nature, while burning off some energy.
- Create an obstacle course
Transform your garden into an adventure zone using cones, skipping ropes, hula hoops, buckets, and anything else you have lying around. Record the time of each family member and see who can complete the course the fastest.
- Picnic in a new place
Instead of eating lunch at home, pack a picnic and visit a local park, nature reserve, or even your own back garden. Everything feels more exciting when you eat outdoors!
- Get creative with arts and crafts
Rainy day? No problem! Gather paper, paint, cardboard boxes, glue, and recyclable materials to make robots, castles, animals, or summer-themed decorations such as flowers or dream catchers. Let your children’s imagination run wild.
- Visit your local library
Libraries often host free summer reading challenges, storytelling sessions, craft workshops, and family events throughout the holidays. It’s a brilliant way to encourage reading while enjoying free entertainment.
- Become junior chefs
Choose a simple recipe and get the kids involved in measuring, mixing, decorating, and tasting. Homemade pizzas, cupcakes, fruit kebabs, or ice lollies are always popular choices and super easy to make and enjoy.
- Water play fun
When the weather warms up, bring out the paddling pool, water balloons, sprinklers, or even a few buckets and sponges. Water games are guaranteed to keep children smiling on hot summer days.
- Explore somewhere new
You don’t have to travel far to have an adventure. Visit a nearby village, nature trail, country park, or museum you’ve never explored before. Sometimes the best memories are made close to home.
- Have a family games day
Again, another great option for those rainy or downtime days. Dust off the board games, organise a scavenger hunt, or hold mini competitions with simple prizes. Include everyone and enjoy some screen-free family time together.
- Make a summer memory jar
Each time your family does something fun, write it on a colourful piece of paper and pop it into a jar. At the end of the summer, empty the jar and relive all your favourite memories together.
Other summer holidays savings
- Bus travel for children will be free for the whole of August.
- Liverpool City Council has launched a new free leisure membership for Liverpool residents. This is accessible for children and young people, helping more families access opportunities to stay active, healthy, and connected to their local community. This includes free swimming for under 8’s. To sign up, visit here.
- “Read to the Beat!” is an event happening across all Liverpool libraries, celebrating the joy of music through the magic of reading. Featuring a collection of 55 books inspired by music from around the world, children can explore stories, poetry, graphic novels, and non-fiction for all reading levels. Find out more here.
The best memories aren’t always the most expensive
Children often remember the simple moments—laughing in the garden, building dens, making cakes, splashing in puddles, or enjoying an ice cream after a walk. Summer is about spending quality time together, trying new things, and making memories that last long after the holidays are over therefore, any moment spent together this summer is special and memorable.
Whatever your plans are for the summer holidays, remember that a little imagination goes a long way. We hope you have a fun filled summer holiday!
